The Things We Can't Insure: Making Time for the People Who Matter

With spooky season coming up, it's a good time to make sure you're protecting your special things from the evil spirits of this world.
Okay, maybe your insurance policy can’t protect you from actual ghosts. But it can help protect some of the things you’d hate to see disappear.
October is a good time to think about the valuables around your home that may be worth more than you realize.
The Scary Truth About Your Valuables
Think about the things you own that would be difficult or expensive to replace:
- Jewelry and watches
- Musical instruments
- Computers and electronics
- Cameras and photography equipment
- Artwork and collectibles
- Sports memorabilia
- Other valuable personal belongings
Your homeowners or renters insurance may provide coverage for personal property, but certain categories of valuables can be subject to special limits, exclusions, or other policy conditions.
That means simply having homeowners insurance doesn't necessarily mean every valuable item is fully protected in every situation.
Don't Wait Until Something Goes Missing
One of the easiest things you can do is create a home inventory.
Walk through your home and take photos or videos of your belongings. For higher-value items, keep receipts, appraisals, serial numbers, and other documentation in a safe place.
Why?
If you ever have a covered loss, having a record of what you own can make it much easier to document your property and work through the claims process.
And while you're looking around, you might discover a few things that deserve a closer look at your coverage.
When Was the Last Time You Reviewed Your Valuables?
Maybe you bought a new guitar this year.
Maybe you received jewelry as a gift.
Maybe your collection has grown.
Or maybe you haven't thought about your personal property coverage since you originally purchased your policy.
October is a great excuse to change that.
If you own something particularly valuable, ask whether your current policy provides the protection you expect, or whether additional coverage—such as scheduled personal property or a separate policy—may be appropriate.
Our October Challenge
Before Halloween, pick one room in your home and spend 10 minutes documenting its contents
Take pictures. Save important receipts. Write down serial numbers for expensive electronics. Check whether any particularly valuable items might need additional attention.
It isn't quite as exciting as carving a pumpkin
But finding out after a loss that something wasn't covered as you expected is a lot scarier.
